Região Metropolitana de São Luís, sendo um dos quatro municípios que integram a Ilha. Está situada no extremo leste de frente para a Baía de São José, distante da capital cerca de 32 km.
Imediatamente, uma onda gigantesca livrou a embarcação do perigo. Após alguns anos, o capitão regressou de Portugal trazendo a imagem do Santo. De frente para Baia, mandou construir uma modesta capelinha de palha e deu ao local o nome de Ribamar, por estar “arriba”, acima do mar.
Em setembro acontece o maior evento da cidade reunindo milhares de fiéis vindos de todos os lugares do Brasil, é o festejo de São José de Ribamar. A primeira parte da festa é religiosa, com missa e procissão, logo após acontece a cultural, com as principais manifestações folclóricas do Estado. Ao longo do ano atrações como o lava-pratos que ocorre no primeiro final de semana após o carnaval, Festa do Divino Espírito Santo e Coração de Nossa Senhora, Festas juninas e lava-bois. A Religiosidade é a primeira impressão que se experimenta ao chegar à cidade.
Os Principais pontos turísticos a serem visitados são:
Praça da Matriz e Igreja: Localizadas na parte mais central da cidade. Ali acontecem as comemorações a São José de Ribamar, durante a festa anual realizada em setembro. Imagens gigantes de São José, Nossa Senhora e o menino Jesus dominam a paisagem.
Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes: Réplica da gruta existente na França, foi construída em 1957.
Praias: Desertas e com belas paisagens naturais. Boa para banhos e prática de esporte. Possui também grande potencial para a pesca. E outro pontos importantes como: O Caminho de São José, Concha acústica, Museu dos ex-votos com o monumento de São José Centro de Cultura e Turismo e Lojas de artesanato.

Poço da Saúde: Fonte hidromineral que, segundo a crença popular, contém propriedades curativas.
Além de pontos turísticos bonitos e bem cuidados, a cidade é limpa e organizada.
A maneira mais fácil de chegar a São José de Ribamar é pela MA-201, totalmente pavimentada com acostamento.

En Septembre le plus grand événement se passe dans regroupant des milliers de fidèles ville de toutes les régions du Brésil, est la fête de Saint Joseph de Ribamar. La première partie de la célébration religieuse, avec une messe et procession a lieu peu de temps après la culture, manifestations folkloriques avec les plus grands de l'Etat. Au cours des attractions ans comme le lave-vaisselle qui se produit dans le premier week-end après le Carnaval, Fête du Saint-Esprit et le Cœur de Notre-Dame, parties Juin et le bétail de lavage. La religiosité est la première impression que l'on éprouve en arrivant dans la ville.
